Tell Congress to oppose S. 978, the new “Ten Strikes” bill

Here they go again: The big business lobbyists who are behind the Internet Blacklist Bill are already making the sequel. THIS WEEK Senators will be voting on a “Ten Strikes” bill to make it a felony to stream copyrighted content — like music in the background of a Youtube video — more than ten times.

As the writers at TechDirt point out, under this bill you could go to jail for posting video of your friends singing karaoke:

The entertainment industry is freaking out about sites that embed and stream infringing content, and want law enforcement to put people in jail over it, rather than filing civil lawsuits…. We already pointed to one possibility: that people embedding YouTube videos could face five years in jail. Now, others are pointing out that it could also put kids who lip sync to popular songs, and post the resulting videos on YouTube, in jail as well.

That’s right: Ten strikes and you could get jail time.  Less than two weeks ago, the Hollywood industry magazine, Variety, reported, “Industry lobbyists pressed House members on Wednesday to pass legislation that would make illegal streaming of movies, TV shows and other types of content a felony….”

The oceans are in a worse state than previously suspected, according to an expert panel of scientists.

Well, this isn’t shocking to those who have studied and paid attention to the serious issues concerning the oceans.

This is more important than you realize. You can help save our oceans.

Oceanic biodiversity is what breathes life into ecosystems on land, including us.

1/4 of the world’s coral reefs, which are home to 20-30% of the ocean’s species are currently in danger due to pollution. Between 10-15% of all coral reefs are considered to be totally dead and 60-70% are in imminent danger. 

Currently, about 30% of all fish species are overfished and 80% of about 200 commercially important fish stocks in the U.S. alone are fully exploited or overfished.  If we continue to do what we’re doing now, we can expect the ocean to collapse by 2048.

Phytoplankton, which behave as one of the most fundamental components of the food chain, have declined by 40% since 1950 due to a rise in oceanic temperatures by just 1 degree. The temperature of the ocean is expected to rise by 3 degrees relatively soon.

Ocean acidification, which has been said to be just as if not more threatening than global warming itself, has greatly disrupted the PH balance of the oceans, resulting in an increase of acidity by about 30%.

The global fishing fleet is estimated to be two and a half times greater than needed to catch what the ocean can sustainably produce.

As a result of overfishing, 63% of assessed fish stocks worldwide are in serious need of rebuilding. Currently, 72 percent of all assessed EU fish stocks are estimated to be overexploited, with over 20 percent being fished beyond safe biological limits, threatening their very future.

Current worldwide economic losses as a result of illegal and unreported fishing have been estimated to be as much as US$23.5 billion annually, which is on the order of 22% of total fisheries production.

Choosing a sustainable fish for supper isn’t enough. Both commercial fishermen and the politicians that do their bidding must recognize that global overfishing by many nations now threatens the oceans and the economies that depend on them. And the only way to deal with that threat is with strong international rules to end all unsustainable fishing.

Phytoplankton also produce at least half of the oxygen we breathe.
