Montreal police use UV tattoos on arrested #occupy protesters to quickly identify them and prevent them from returning to the public square. UV tattoos pose health risks.  → salon.com

Occupy protesters in Montreal were dismayed to find they had been marked by police with a special ink that is only visible in UV light after being arrested during a raid of Victoria Square Friday.

Police told CTV Montreal they borrowed the technique from bouncers at clubs and bars and it is meant to mark protesters who might return to the square.

But they apparently weren’t so forthcoming with at least one protester.

“They wrote on my hand with a permanent marker and then after I felt something pointy and metallic scraping across my skin,” wrote protester Nina Haigh on Facebook, continuing:

I immediately asked “What are you doing” and they simply said we wrote on you with a pen and showed me a bunch of various pens in her hand.

I didn’t argue about it and I was unable to look at my hands as they were tied behind my back with zipties. As soon as I was released I looked at my hands and there was no ink on them from a pen. …

This morning we tested my hands under a black light and sure enough there was a number 2! The freaky thing is this is IN my skin, washing my hands and scrubbing with abrasives will not get this off…. perhaps in several months of my skin cells renewing themselves if will eventually fade.

What ever ink that is in there is irritating my skin slightly and its a very terrible feeling that they put a substance in my body with out my consent and then later lied about it.

Here’s the picture of Haigh’s hand under normal light:

The picture of her hands under UV light is at the top of this post.

I’ve asked the Montreal police for comment on all this, and I’ll update this post if I hear back.

There are reports of police using invisible ink to mark objects as part of campaigns against burglary and underage drinking. But this seems to be the first time UV ink has been used to mark people during the Occupy movement. Have any experience with this ink? Email me.

UPDATE: So what did being marked with the UV ink feel like?

“It felt very similar to some one drawing on you with a nail,” Haigh tells me. “It really wasn’t a pleasant feeling and I passed a good 24 hours wondering what they had done to me before my friends and I figured it out. I did get a rash from the ink for a few days and my hand was rather sensitive.”

She adds the marking faded after four days, “but I still feel my body was violated.”

UPDATE II: This tattoo website suggests that UV ink has a history of health risks.

That’s a lot of effort and money put just to shut people up..

I’m not as religious as I used to be, but if there was one thing about my Christian upbringing that I remember vividly it was the book of Revelations—probably because that’s all they ever spouted at us (THE WORLD IS-AH ENDIN!) and probably my own morbid, childhood fascination with the end of the world.

Anyone who has ever read that… well, think about the whole “mark of the beast” issue and shit bricks. Then again, people thought Social Security #’s were the “mark of the beast” when that first came about.

Just creepy little things.

[trigger warning: discussion of validity] Re: "My question is, why should we be so demanding that people accept so many completely unproveable things?" → kinspeak.tumblr.com

qichi:

kinspeak:

People are seeing this from a perspective of “change your belief system to include the personal theories we have about our identity”. And, no one is asking that.

What we are asking, is to accept something that can be proved true, unless you believe all otherkin are liars: that we identify this way. That this identity is meaningful to us. That it deserves to be respected, because it is our identity.

“I respect your Christian belief” does not mean that you change your belief to believe in Jesus Christ. It means that you accept that the belief in Jesus Christ is very meaningful for some people. You accept that that belief is a core part of them and affects their life and the way they do things. You accept that they wish to be called a Christian. You accept that because they are Christian, there are particular things that they are not comfortable with doing.

Otherkin experience is even more than this, because, we are not just talking about a belief but also, experiences. We are talking about phantom limbs. We are talking about people who feel a need, a burning aching need, to be near water or forest or sky and they are depressed if they don’t get it. We are talking about people who have times when being human feels absolutely too much for them, and they need to go and hide for a time.

You do not have to believe anything particular about otherkin, to respect that this is true.

If you wish to say then, “okay, so I believe that they experience this. But, I also believe it’s a mental illness. So, why I can’t say that to them?” Well, for the same reason that it is not polite, respectful or useful to tell someone, “I think your chronic fatigue syndrome is all in your head”. For the same reason that it is not polite, respectful or useful to tell someone, “I think you’re just pretending to be a different gender”. For the same reason that it is not polite, respectful or useful to attack to their face, anyone’s understanding of their self. For the same reason that it is clear that trans* people, people with BDD, otherkin, and other people, can experience dysphoria that can be seriously painful, and no matter why you think it happens, it is an asshole action to laugh at these people, to make light of their feelings, to try and say that there is no reason to support them and give them the things they need, to say that society should ignore them or treat them as broken.

I don’t care where you believe transgender nature comes from, but I care that you believe that my trans* friends really do experience what they say they experience, and that it bothers them.

The same with otherkin nature.

And remember there is no “evidence” that people’s brains work a different way when they are gay. There was not until recently, “evidence” that trans* people have any kind of different brain. There was no evidence. But we accept these things exist now, because enough people say, “this hurts me and affects me”.

And, that is what we want you to listen to. Listen to us saying, this is a problem. Don’t ignore us.

this is a legit-ass post

and actually i’m saying that more as someone who needs to listen to its advice than as someone it affects

The shocking truth about the crackdown on Occupy → guardian.co.uk

1exp:

“As I write, two hundred young people, with sleeping bags, suitcases and even folding chairs, are still camping out all night and day outside of NBC on public sidewalks – under the benevolent eye of an NYPD cop – awaiting Saturday Night Live tickets, so surely the camping is not the issue. I was still deeply puzzled as to why OWS, this hapless, hopeful band, would call out a violent federal response.

That is, until I found out what it was that OWS actually wanted.

The mainstream media was declaring continually “OWS has no message”. Frustrated, I simply asked them. I began soliciting online “What is it you want?” answers from Occupy. In the first 15 minutes, I received 100 answers. These were truly eye-opening.

The No 1 agenda item: get the money out of politics. Most often cited was legislation to blunt the effect of the Citizens United ruling, which lets boundless sums enter the campaign process. No 2: reform the banking system to prevent fraud and manipulation, with the most frequent item being to restore the Glass-Steagall Act – the Depression-era law, done away with by President Clinton, that separates investment banks from commercial banks. This law would correct the conditions for the recent crisis, as investment banks could not take risks for profit that create kale derivatives out of thin air, and wipe out the commercial and savings banks.

No 3 was the most clarifying: draft laws against the little-known loophole that currently allows members of Congress to pass legislation affecting Delaware-based corporations in which they themselves are investors.

When I saw this list – and especially the last agenda item – the scales fell from my eyes. Of course, these unarmed people would be having the shit kicked out of them.”

Here's something that the USA residents (not sure about foreign residents) CAN ACTUALLY DO to help stop SOPA: Get your name added to the filibuster list! → stopcensorship.org

silencedrowns:

Senator Wyden has promised to attempt to filibuster this bill’s voting period if not enough evidence against it can be presented. Traditionally filibustering involves reading the phonebook or something like that, but this time, he’s going to read a list of people who oppose the bill. If you live in the US, add yourself to this. You will be heard by congress.
